Band concert washed out

Band concert washed out

CANFIELD— The high school band concert scheduled for Thursday afternoon was canceled due to rain and mud in the grandstand. The schools scheduled to play were Canfield, West Branch, Struthers, South Range, Jackson-Milton, Sebring, Lowellville, Austintown, Springfield, Western Reserve and Campbell.

The concert will not be rescheduled. Though Canfield Fair Board members said the students were disappointed by the cancellation, they have various displays set up in the Education Building. A booth representing each Mahoning County District is displayed, as well as individual art projects.

“This building is a preservation of what Mahoning County education is all about,” said Shari Lewis, math consultant for Mahoning County. Each school is recognized for participation, but the artwork is judged according to 22 categories.

Demolition Derby

CANFIELD— The so-called World’s Largest Demolition Derby will begin at 8 p.m. today in the grandstand.

Reserved grandstand tickets are $9. Tickets for children ages 7 to 12 are $5 and can be purchased only at the fairgrounds.

It’s considered the largest derby because it has six to seven heats, instead of the normal two to three heats.

The derby is sponsored by Wags ’N Wiggles Resort and HOT FM 101.1.

Fair attendance down

CANFIELD— Though the attendance numbers were down almost 11,000 on the first day of the fair, board members are optimistic the weekend will bring in a crowd.

Last year, 25,311 people attended on the first day, but only 14,690 came out Wednesday.

Two days of rain and some Mahoning County schools already back in session are potential reasons for smaller crowd.

The rain is expected to clear by this evening, leaving a brighter outlook for the weekend.

According to weather.com, today will be 81 degrees with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Saturday will be 80 degrees and partly cloudy. Sunday and Monday will be all sunshine with a high of 83 degrees.
