Boardman Township Plan

Trustee Larry Moliterno submitted a document to fellow trustees, union leaders, department heads and business committee members outlining what he calls the first steps in establishing a strategic plan for the township. Some of the items:

Short-term goal of hiring up to 10 police officers to provide additional safety coverage for the community. The long-term goal is to build the police force to an appropriate number, approximately 75, to protect the citizenry from the increased threat of crime from the outside the community.

Short-term goal of hiring six firefighters, improving response time for both fire and medical emergencies. With a limited amount of overtime, this will ensure three fire stations remain open nearly every day of the year.

Develop a capital improvement plan apart from township-owned facilities.

Establish a community beautification plan.

Ensure the reopening of the compost site. Explore a collaborative project with Boardman Park and/or charging a fee for the service.

Phase out the inheritance tax revenue from the operations budget over a five-year period and use the inheritance tax dollars to create a rainy-day fund and also to fund special projects and facility improvements.

Develop a road repaving plan to provide the appropriate number of miles to be repaved annually to ensure roads don’t overextend their life expectancy.

Develop a strategy for the continued presence of the police department in the local school system. This may include continued efforts to secure private funding to retain the victims advocate, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and the school resource officer.

Develop a plan for the renovation or relocation of the main fire station on U.S. Route 224 and the fire prevention office.

Continue efforts on stormwater projects.

Continue to meet with legislators to discuss revisiting the tax structure for similar developed townships.

Explore opportunities for regional cooperation with other communities.

Explore the pros/cons of incorporation.
