ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Matt Garza and two relievers combined on a six-hitter and Carlos Pena homered to lead Tampa Bay. Garza (11-7) allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 72‚Ñ3 innings. Dan Wheeler pitched the ninth for his ninth save. Pena homered in the fourth, his 27th of the season and sixth over his past 13 games.

Red Sox 11, Yankees 3

NEW YORK — Jason Bay drove in four runs and Dustin Pedroia hit a grand slam for Boston. Pedroia’s first career slam capped a seven-run eighth inning and New York dropped seven games behind Boston. Paul Byrd (9-11) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out five and improved to 2-1 in three starts since Boston acquired him from the Indians this month. Byrd has won six of his last seven starts following a five-game losing streak.

Orioles 11, White Sox 3

BALTIMORE — Brian Roberts had three RBIs as Baltimore ended a five-game losing streak. Roberts gave the Orioles the lead for good with a two-run single in the second, then drove in a run with his AL-leading 46th double in the fourth. Aubrey Huff hit his 29th homer and drove in three runs, and Melvin Mora and Kevin Millar also homered for the Orioles. Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye homered for the White Sox.

Twins 6, Mariners 5

SEATTLE — Denard Span drove in two runs and threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth as Minnesota snapped a four-game losing streak. The Twins scored three runs in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead.

Rangers 3, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Texas’ Matt Harrison won for the fourth time in August. Harrison (6-3), a 22-year-old rookie left-hander, went 4-1 in five August starts. He held the Royals to two runs, one earned, and seven hits in 62‚Ñ3 innings.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 6, Phillies 3

PHILADELPHIA — Daniel Murphy hit a tie-breaking double after Carlos Delgado’s second solo homer had tied the game in the eighth and New York reclaimed first place in the NL East. Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer and Jayson Werth homered for the Phillies.

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4

SAN DIEGO — Jody Gerut singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth and San Diego denied Randy Johnson his 295th career win. Gerut, who had three hits, singled off Chad Qualls (2-8) and drove in Chase Headley from second to give the Padres a sweep of the three-game series against the NL West leaders.

Nationals 5, Dodgers 4

WASHINGTON — Tim Redding outpitched Greg Maddux to send Los Angeles to a season-high sixth consecutive loss. Redding (9-8) held the Dodgers in check for six innings, allowing three solo homers among eight hits.

Marlins 4, Braves 1

ATLANTA — Florida’s Josh Johnson threw a four-hitter for the first complete game of his career. Hanley Ramirez had a two-run single and Dan Uggla hit his 28th homer for the Marlins, who have won three of five.

Astros 4, Reds 1

HOUSTON — Roy Oswalt limited Cincinnati to five hits in seven innings. Hunter Pence and Ty Wigginton hit two-run homers to help Oswalt beat the Reds for the 22nd time in 23 decisions.

Cardinals 5, Brewers 3

ST. LOUIS — Ryan Ludwick lacked a triple for the cycle and had two RBIs to lead St. Louis’ comeback from a three-run deficit.
