YOUNGSTOWN — Gambles by three lottery players paid off in games netting more than $82,000 combined in cash.

Sheldon B. Walker of Warren won a $150,000 top prize, $5,000 a year for life on “Money for Life.” After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, Walker chose the cash option, receiving a check for $51,750. Walker bought the ticket from One Stop Gas Mart, 858 N. Park Avenue in Warren. That agent receives a $1,500 bonus for selling a winning ticket.

William E. Conti of Boardman won $18,888 on “Electric 8’s” game. Conti will receive a check for $13,032.

A Lima woman, Michelle Haithcock, also won $25,000 on “Doubling Star Cashword.” Haithcock will receive a check for $17,250.

Sebring firefighters get grant for new gear

SEBRING — Sebring Fire Department was awarded a grant of $62,073 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program. Fire Chief Jim Cannell said Wednesday he’s excited about the grant and will use the money for new boots, helmets, coats — “all new gear from top to bottom.” The department, which also serves Smith Township, has 30 firefighters. Sebring is one of six Ohio fire departments that will share in grants that total $572,279. The grants were announced by the office of U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich, R-Ohio.

Road resurfacing

EAST PALESTINE — Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 11 announced work will begin Tuesday to resurface Park Avenue and Rebecca Street.

They are a continuous road that will be resurfaced from the junction of Brookdale and Main streets to West Taggart Street.

Traffic will be maintained with flaggers. ODOT’s contractor for the $618,417 project is Karvo Paving Co. of Cuyahoga Falls. The completion date is Oct. 31.

Man shot in argument with another motorist

WARREN — A 25-year-old city man came to the Warren Police Department about 11 p.m. Tuesday to report he had been shot in the hand and leg during an argument with another motorist.

The man said he was the passenger in a car headed west on Saratoga Street Southwest, when his car had to stop for a large SUV blocking the street. The victim and the driver of his vehicle got out to confront the driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, when a man got out of the vehicle and shot him.

The man told police he was headed to a hospital for treatment.

Sock Hop on Saturday

EAST PALESTINE — The third annual Sock Hop sponsored by Ozer Ministries will be Saturday at the city park’s Community Center. Admission is free.

Children’s games will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m. Oldies music will accompany the Sock Hop, which will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Prizes will be given for the best 1950s costume.

Food will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the raffles, silent auction and other events will benefit Ozer Ministries’ ongoing programs.

Lunch prices approved

STRUTHERS — The Struthers Board of Education has approved the cafeteria prices for this school year. The only change from last year is a 10-cent increase in the price of milk, from 40 cents to 50 cents.

The price of school lunches will remain the same: $1.75 for elementary pupils, $2 for middle school pupils and $2.25 for high school students.

Investigation continues

ELKRUN — The Columbiana County prosecutor said at least two shots were fired from a .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle in the shooting death of Sherry L. Ieropoli. The investigation continues, Prosecutor Robert Herron said.

Ieropoli, 47, was pronounced dead about 7:42 p.m. Sunday at her home at 10984 state Route 45 near Lisbon. Her husband, Nicholas, whose age was not available, and her son, Jesse, 17, were in the house.
