Today’s speakers
Some of the speakers expected to address the convention today:
SEN. JOE BIDEN: Delaware’s senior senator has run for president twice, but he gives the speech of his life today as Obama’s running mate. He’s chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is considered experienced in dealing with international affairs. Democrats hope Biden’s long diplomatic r sum assuages concerns Obama may be too inexperienced to be president.
FORMER PRESIDENT CLINTON: One of today’s most anticipated speeches comes from the former president, who campaigned spiritedly for his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her contest against Barack Obama. Party leaders hope the ex-president, who had some harsh words for Obama during the primaries, strikes a harmonious tone and whips up enthusiasm for Biden.
SEN. JOHN KERRY: The party’s 2004 nominee for president, Kerry lost several Western states by razor-thin margins. Obama’s campaign has said that three of those states — Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico — are states seen as strong possibilities to turn around Democratic fortunes this year.
SEN. HARRY REID: The Senate majority leader from Nevada is a gold miner’s son who has resisted Republican calls for more domestic oil drilling, arguing that the nation should look to solar and renewable energy instead.
