YSU welcomes students with activities


Enrollment is up 1.3 percent.

YOUNGSTOWN — Monday’s Youngstown State University enrollment was 13,423, which is 1.37 percent above last fall’s opening day totals, school officials said.

Official enrollment counts are taken on the 14th day of the semester.

YSU also plans a weeklong series of events for Welcome Week. The theme is “Your Journey Begins Here.”

A YSU identification card is required for most activities. Among events are:

UToday, Student Organizational Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kilcawley Center with 40 student organizations available for questions and additional information; “It’s All Greek to Me,” Greek student organizational fair from noon to 1 p.m. in the Ohio Room, Kilcawley Center, with members of campus sororities and fraternities and their advisers answering questions and offering a free lunch; and foam and dance party from 7-10 p.m. in Rec-5 across from Pete’s Place, behind Kilcawley Center.

UWednesday, KC block party sponsored by Kilcawley Center from 12:30-3:30 p.m. in the Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center; kickball tournament sponsored by Student Diversity Office from 3-5 p.m. at Rec-5 area; ROTC gun simulation from 3-6 p.m. at Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center with use of lasers and projected targets; and free showing of “The Strangers” at 9 p.m. at Beede Field, Stambaugh Stadium. Enter through the student section gate at the east side stands. No bags or backpacks permitted; snacks will be provided.

UThursday, a cornhole/Kan-Jam, tailgating favorites, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the campus core; water balloon fight from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus core. Buy water balloons from YSUnity; picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at University Courtyard Apartments with free lunch for students, faculty and staff. Prizes awarded to new students that participate in the event; “Managing Your Funds” program from noon to 1 p.m. in Gallery Room at Kilcawley Center with representatives from the campus branch of Home Savings and Loan for a discussion on fund management; 3-on-3 basketball and volleyball tournament, sponsored by Student Diversity Office, from 2-5 p.m. at University Courtyard Apartments; and concert featuring Danity Kane at 7 p.m. on the grass area behind the student section, east side stands of Stambaugh Stadium.

UFriday, Guess for Gas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lower Arcade of Kilcawley Center and answer trivia questions to win gas card certificates.

USaturday, YSU vs. Ohio State University football game. Local viewing begins at the 12:05 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, Youngstown Sports Grille, Jillian’s and MVR.
