Youngstown State University began in 1908 with a college- level class of nine men in an evening class in commercial law. The university is celebrating its centennial. A convocation Sunday on campus attracted about 450 students and some 1,200 people overall, which included parents.

Incoming freshmen: About 3,500 students representing 502 high schools, 14 states and 25 foreign countries.

Academic achievement: Of the incoming freshmen, 521 received YSU scholarships and awards, 40 are University Scholars and 73 are high school valedictorians.

Graduates: YSU has some 85,000 alumni. YSU has gone from nine students in one building to some 13,000 students using 50 buildings and earning more than 30 different kinds of associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Tuition: Annual in-state tuition is $6,721 and room and board is an additional $6,740. Out-of-state tuition is $12,393. Students living in 23 regional areas in Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia get a discount. Tuition is $9,414.
