On Aug. 31, John P. Brown III ends his year as national commander of AMVETS, a veterans service organization that welcomes all branches of the military, including the National Guard and Reserve. Here’s a rundown of his activities:

Brown has been host of a radio talk show on veterans issues for 25 years for several Clear Channel radio stations in Youngstown.

While he was commander of AMVETS Department of Ohio, Brown worked to establish AMVETS Career Centers for Ohio veterans.

As a Navy veteran, he completed two tours on river boats in Vietnam as well as service on the USS Saratoga. He received several awards and citations, including a Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, a National Defense Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.

He worked for Ameritech Corp. for 31 years in various customer service capacities.

A life member and four-term commander of AMVETS Post 44 of Youngstown, Brown has served in numerous leadership capacities for AMVETS at the national, state and local levels. He is past chairman of the Mahoning County POW/MIA Program and a member of numerous other area veterans organizations.

Brown and his wife, Jan, a retired Air Force senior master sergeant who is also active in AMVETS at the state and national levels, have three children, Charlene, Stephanie and Christopher, and seven grandchildren.
