WTC steel becomes monument at Pa. site

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Steel from the World Trade Center has been transformed into a cross and has been placed near where Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.

The 14-foot-high, 3,000-pound monument traveled from New York to the Shanksville fire station Saturday as part of a 300-mile motorcycle escort from New York.

The cross will be dedicated at a ceremony today. It’s not part of the official $58 million Flight 93 National Memorial, which is expected to be about 40 percent complete for a ribbon-cutting on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

An official probe found four hijackers crashed the United Airlines airplane near Shanksville when passengers tried to wrest control of the cockpit. Flight 93 was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco.
