Military families

A look at organizations devoted to helping families of deployed troops:

Operation Homefront: San Antonio, Texas-based group founded in 2001. Provides military families with emergency assistance such as food, baby-care items, vehicle donation and repair. Also donates household and baby furniture, appliances, and physical labor to help with relocation.

Greencare For Troops: New Prague, Minn.-based program founded in 2006. Provides military families with landscape contractors who mow, trim and otherwise maintain lawns and green spaces.

Give An Hour: Bethesda, Md.-based organization founded in 2005. National network of mental-health professionals who provide counseling to troops and their families as well as treatment for anxiety, depression, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder.
