Girard plans updates for city’s Web site

The city’s Web site will be operated by a committee of residents.

GIRARD — City officials are planning to take advantage of technology with a new and improved Web site that will serve as a focal point of communication in the community.

There will be a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Multi-Generational Center for those interested in helping to create the new site for the city. Councilman Larry Williams said officials are asking for interested residents, businesses and organizations to attend.

Williams said the Web site will be run by a committee of city residents. The committee determines what will be on the site — such as history, event calendars and special announcements on a daily basis.

The city currently has a Web address — www.cityofgirard.com — but Williams said it has outdated information and has been neglected. The new Web site, he said, will have the same address, but a new look and new content.

“We will be doing a site that will be used by the city and community regularly. We want it updated daily. We want the Web site to be used as a tool for events, a place to upload pictures and a place to hold all minutes, ordinances and resolutions in the city. It will be a one-stop shop for information,” said Williams.

Williams said Councilman Michael Costarella, himself and other city officials decided to put the new Web site together when they realized too much information was being missed by too many city residents. The new Web site, he said, will be able to relay information such as school closings, boil alerts and road hazards instantaneously.

Williams said startup cost and operating costs for the Web site will be minimal because Costarella has volunteered his time to set up the site. Daily updates will come from community volunteers.

“The people, the public will run this site,” said Williams. “For economic development, this is one of the things we have to do. We want to show Girard on the map, what we do and what we have to offer.”
