Roads closed
YOUNGSTOWN — The following drives in Mill Creek Park will be closed from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sept. 6 for the YMCA Community Cup: New Bears Den Drive, Bears Den Drive, West Glacier Drive, Cross Drive and West Park Drive.
All parking for the Community Cup will be held in the Wick Recreation Area accessible by Belle Vista Avenue and McCollum Road.
Softball charity game raises $5,000
NILES — The Mahoning County All-Stars and the Trumbull County All-Stars battled to an 11-11 deadlock in the first-ever “Softball Game of Hope Classic” at Eastwood Field.
The game raised $5,000 with money still being collected and pledged.

ITA Academic Award
GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Grove City College men’s tennis program recently earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic team award for its cumulative performance in the classroom during the 2007-08 academic year.
The All-Academic award is given to teams whose players compile an aggregate 3.20 grade-point average for the year.
Titan scrimmage
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Westminster College football team will hold its Blue and White intrasquad scrimmage today at 2:45 p.m. at Harold Burry Stadium.
The scrimmage is open to the public and admission is free. Westminster players will also be available for interviews and photographs in their game jerseys beginning at 1 p.m.

OSU selects captains
COLUMBUS — James Laurinaitis will serve for a second year as an Ohio State captain, joining quarterback Todd Boeckman, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and wide receiver Brian Robiskie as leaders of the football team this fall.
Laurinaitis, an All-American linebacker and winner of the Butkus Award a year ago, becomes just the seventh Ohio State player to be a captain for two years. The others were Richard T. Ellis (1891-92), Archie Griffin (1974-75), Glen Cobb (1981-82), Thomas Johnson (1984-85), Joe Cooper (2000-01) and Steve Bellisari (2000-01).

Johnstown becomes Blue Jackets farm
COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets will have their third East Coast Hockey League affiliate in as many years when the Johnstown Chiefs become a part of their system in 2008-2009.
The Blue Jackets announced Friday they had reached a new agreement with the Chiefs and would continue their affiliation with the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch.
The Blue Jackets’ ECHL affiliate was Dayton from 2000-2007, then Elmira last season.

Moment of silence
Hall of Fame player and longtime NFL union head Gene Upshaw will be remembered this weekend with a moment of silence at NFL exhibition games.
Upshaw, who served as the executive director of the NFL Players Association for 25 years, died Wednesday night of pancreatic cancer.
