Restaurateur listed as stable after robbery and shooting

WARREN — Vital signs for Anthony DeVengencie, the 71-year-old survivor of a robbery at Freddie’s Diner on North Park Avenue last week, are stable.

That gives family members hope that he will survive the shooting and robbery that killed his father, Fred A. DeVengencie, 89, of Warren.

Al DeVengencie, nephew of Anthony DeVengencie, also of Warren, said chances of his uncle’s survival “look good.” He continues to recover in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.

But questions remain as to the future of the diner and adjacent Sons of Italy Lodge 2356, Al DeVengencie said.

For now, both businesses are closed, but when his uncle is in better shape, Anthony DeVengencie and his two brothers will determine what the future holds for the two establishments, Al DeVengencie said.

Police, who have not reported any arrests in the case, say the two DeVengencies and two employees were alone in the restaurant Aug. 13 at about 9 a.m. when a man entered through a side door.

The man took money from the cash register and employees and then tried to get money from a safe. A scuffle broke out and shots were fired, killing the elder DeVengencie.
