Mangiarelli’s TDs power Howland, 31-7


ASHTABULA — Michael Mangiarelli’s touchdown runs of 64 and 20 yards on Thursday powered the Howland High football team to a 31-7 victory over Ashtabula Lakeside.

Mangiarelli’s first score came in the first quarter and gave the Tigers (1-0) a 14-0 lead.

Solomon Jackson’s 6-yard run opened the scoring.

After Lakeside’s Derrell McCaleb scored on a 16-yard run, Howland’s Eric Albani ended the first-half scoring with a 37-yard field goal.

In the third quarter, Tigers quarterback Matthew Preston hit tight end Tyler Scott with a 14-yard scoring pass.

The Tigers rushed for 264 yards on 39 attempts. Mangiarelli had seven carries for 114 yards. Senior Dante Marsh chipped in with 74 yards on eight attempts.

Preston completed five of nine passes for 70 yards. Marsh caught three of them for 21 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers limited Lakeside to 131 yards rushing on 35 tries. Quarterback James Christian completed seven of his 15 passes for 66 yards. One was intercepted by Howland’s David Nelson who returned it 35 yards.
