Bruce Arena hired

CARSON, Calif. — Former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena was hired Monday as coach of David Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy, who haven’t won a game in over two months.

Arena was to be introduced at a news conference Monday after guiding the team through practice for the first time. He will make his debut as the Galaxy coach Thursday night against the Chicago Fire — when Beckham and forward Landon Donovan will be missing because of national team duty.

Arena succeeds Ruud Gullit, who resigned last Monday for personal reasons. President and general manager Alexi Lalas was fired the same day.

Lee continues strong

PINEHURST, N.C. — A whirlwind of a month is almost over for Danny Lee.

First, he became only the sixth player in the 106-year history of the Western Amateur to sweep medalist and match play honors, joining a group that includes Phil Mickelson and Curtis Strange.

Then came a tie for 20th over the weekend in his PGA Tour debut at the Wyndham Championship. Those performances leave the 18-year-old from New Zealand as one of the favorites in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, where he opened with a 1-over 71 in the opening round of stroke play Monday.

Mechanicville Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Ahvee’s Destiny won by a head over Canadian Ballet in the $83,250 Mechanicville Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares at Saratoga Race Course on Monday.

It was believed to be the first race at Saratoga in which the first four finishers were trained by the same person. Linda Rice trains 4-year-old Ahvee’s Destiny, Canadian Ballet, Silver Timber, and fourth-place finisher Karakorum Elektra.

The horses are owned by different individuals or partnerships.

Ahvee’s Destiny, ridden by John Velazquez, ran 51‚Ñ2 furlongs over the turf in 1:02.72 and earned $49,950 for Everything’s Cricket Racing. Ahvee’s Destiny paid $20.60, $10.00 and $6.00. Canadian Ballet paid $11.20 and $6.80. Silver Timber paid $4.80, and the superfecta completed by K. Electra paid $3,490.

Genuine Risk dies

Genuine Risk was a fabulous filly who dared to take on the boys in the 1980 Kentucky Derby, and wound up in the winner’s circle draped in a blanket of roses.

One of just three fillies to win America’s greatest race, Genuine Risk died Monday at Newstead Farm in Upperville, Va., at the advanced age of 31. Hall of Fame trainer Leroy Jolley said an “unbelievable determination to win” made Genuine Risk a horse for the ages.
