Albani’s goals lead Howland; Canfield, Hubbard cruise


Maplewood, Springfield and Lakeview posted opening wins.

HOWLAND — Gina Albani scored two goals and Abby Nicholas added a goal and an assist as the Howland High girls soccer team defeated Boardman 4-1 in a season opener Monday.

Jessica Prokup also scored for the Tigers while Gina Wall and Megan Long added assists. Casey Haering made two saves for Howland, which outshot Boardman 13-3.

Missy DeMarinis scored on an assist by Jamie Avona for Boardman. Cheyenne Khatib made nine saves.

JVs: Howland 4-0.

Canfield 9, Ursuline 0

CANFIELD — Sophomore Rachel Morris had three goals, sophomore Katie Siskowic had two and junior Jenne Battaglia added two goals and an assist for Canfield.

Audrey Smith and Molly Martin also scored while Shea Price had two assists and Michelle Gettemy one. Canfield held a 31-0 edge in shots on goal.

For Ursuline, goalkeeper Kyla Kachelries made 18 saves.

Hubbard 7, Liberty 0

LIBERTY — Jordana Lima scored three goals and made three assists for the Eagles (1-0, 1-0).

Kayla Kroesen scored two goals and made an assist while Anna Giancola, Kristen Tobey. Emily Skebo made two assists.

Goaltender Mariah Gordon earned the shutout.

Maplewood 3, Crestview 2

COLUMBIANA — Michelle Sloan scored two goals and Chelsey Wolfe added a third as Maplewood toppled Crestview.

Emily Covll and Bri Vlaiku each scored for the Rebels while Erica Cox added an assist.

Lakeview 7, Badger 1

KINSMAN — Marissa Capogreco and Citlynn Tonkovich each scored three goals for the Bulldogs (1-0). Lindsey Clark also scored and made an assist.

Laura Griffith made two assists. Also with assists were Tonkovich, Marissa Defrancesco, Kiley Mathews and Shawna Hunter. Jen Ulam made two saves.

For the Braves (0-1), Taylor Phillips scored on a penalty kick and Kelsey Flowers made two saves.

Springfield 7, Garfield 1

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Allyson Berry scored seven goals for the Tigers. Breanne Mincher made three assists and Braeden Mincher had one. Goalkeeper Heather Kozak made three saves.

Boys

CORTLAND — Kevin Patrick had a goal and an assist to lead Ursuline (1-0) past Maplewood, 3-2.

Cory Coffey and Marshall Finelli each added goals. Jim Lacko and Manuel Esparra added assists for the Irish, who held a 10-4 edge in shots. Andrew Rich made two saves.

For Maplewood, Bradley Ronyak and Corey Rohrbaugh each had goals and Tyler Perkins had six saves.

Liberty 2, Warren Harding 0

WARREN — Patrick McGarry and Alex Brown scored goals for the Leopards, who took 23 shots on goal.

Eric Wolf and Aaron Karson had assists while Josh Hideg made 23 saves for the Leopards (1-0).

The Raiders are 0-1.
