Police issue warrant for suspect in homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — Police have a warrant out for a suspect in the killing of a South Side man, they said Sunday. They would not identify the suspect.

Delbert L. Jones, 22, of 814 Indianola Ave., was found dead at 6:34 p.m. Saturday, lying face down in a field between his house and a neighbor’s, police reported.

He had numerous gunshot wounds to his back. He was the city’s 20th homicide victim of the year.

10 OVI arrests made at weekend checkpoints

YOUNGSTOWN — Police made 10 arrests on charges of operating a vehicle impaired in two sobriety checks over the weekend in Austintown and on the West Side of Youngstown.

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force formed the “Zero Tolerance Blitz” to crack down on drivers operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The checks took place from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Police also handed out 45 other citations, including those for driving under suspension, seat-belt violations and speeding. One felony arrest was made.

The next sobriety checkpoint for Mahoning County will be Friday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Motorcyclist injured

HERMITAGE, Pa. — A man was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle.

Phillip Cresswell, 23, of Mercer, was speeding east on Virginia Road when he lost control and left the road, police said. The accident happened at 4:28 p.m. Saturday.

He drove along the berm of the road and along the edge of lawns for 330 feet, and then the motorcycle fell over and tumbled 112 feet, police said.

Cresswell flew off the bike and tumbled and slid for 155 feet, police said.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. The hospital said he was in stable condition Sunday.

Amateur photo contest

COLUMBIANA — Boy Scout Troop 16 of Columbiana has taken over as the organizer of the amateur photo contest to be held during the Columbiana Street Fair on Sept. 4-6.

The event was previously organized by the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce.

There will be four categories for people 14 and older: open category for any subject; animals; people; and new this year, “I Love This Town” focusing on Columbiana’s buildings and activities. There will be prizes for first, second and third place in each category.

There also will be a “People’s Choice” winner.

For children 13 and younger, there will be an open category and prizes for first, second and third. There also will be an open category for computer- enhanced photos. There will be a first-place prize.

There is a $3 fee per entry; forms can be found at local stores.
