OVI crackdown

OVI crackdown

BOARDMAN — The township police department will join thousands of other law enforcement agencies throughout the country in support of an intensive crackdown on impaired driving through Labor Day weekend.

“We are going to be intensifying our enforcement efforts with increased officer presence during high-risk nighttime hours when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads,” said Boardman traffic Sgt. John Allsopp.

The department will be supplementing its regular patrols with high-visibility enforcement patrols, as well as participation in area sobriety checkpoints and saturation blitzes.

The funding for the extra patrols is provided by the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Citizens suspecting a drunken driver can call Boardman police at (330) 726-4144.

Rollover on Route 711

GIRARD — A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after he was broad-sided on the state Route 711 connector.

Jeff Huzicka, 38, of Lowellville, whose vehicle rolled over about three times, was released after treatment Friday evening, Girard police said.

The accident happened at 1:40 p.m. Friday after Sandra Grimm, 58, of Steubenville did a U-turn on the connector and struck Huzicka’s car, police said. Grimm wasn’t hurt. She was cited for changing lanes without safety, police said.

Academy needs helpers

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Academy of Excellence is looking for volunteer help to refurbish its gymnasium.

The charter school, now in its fourth year at the former Roosevelt Elementary at 1408 Rigby St., is in need of electricians, painters, carpenters, individuals familiar with school codes and regulations and product donations, said William Byrd, chief administrative officer.

The 200 pupils who began classes this week deserve a place to eat their lunch, have school assemblies and perform physical education, Byrd said.

The school is managed by Mosaica Education Inc., a private operator of K-12 public charter schools.
