Smith sentenced to 20 days in jail
MADISON, Wis. — Former University of Wisconsin tailback Lance Smith, a Howland High graduate, was sentenced to 20 days in the Dane County Jail on charges of battery and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.
Smith, a 20-year-old junior, entered guilty pleas back on Oct. 23 of last year to both charges. The charges stemmed from a physical altercation between Smith and his girlfriend last summer.
Smith was suspended from the football team and finally removed from the team on Aug. 4. He is planning on enrolling at another school, possibly YSU, where he would be eligible immediately.
Bowling team meet greet
NILES — The Youngstown State University Bowling Club will hold a meet greet for all new and returning students who are interested in competing for the men’s or women’s bowling teams for 2008-09.
The event is August 20 at 7 p.m. at McKinley Lanes.

GIRARD—The St. Rose Parish basketball for both boys and girls teams need players and coaches.
Fifth and sixth graders who attend St. Rose Parish or school are eligible.
The girls play from August through November and the boys season is December through February.

East Liverpool tickets
EAST PALESTINE — Fall sport and yearly family passes, football reserved seat passes and senior citizen passes will be on sale in the East Palestine Athletic Office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Monday.
The yearly family passes are $300, the fall family passes are $100. Football reserved seating is $40 and all senior citizens passes for all those 62 years of age or older are at no charge.
Tennis championship
BOARDMAN — The BTSC Intra-Club Tennis Championships will be held at Boardman Tennis and Swim Club Aug. 25-26.
Men’s singles, women’s singles and 16-under singles will be the divisions played Saturday.
The event is open to players associated with the clubs and parks in the Youngstown area.
Marlins win title
WARREN — The Champion Marlins rebounded from a 25-5 loss on Wednesday to defeat the Elite Shockers 8-0 Thursday and claim the 2008 Warren AA Baseball League title.
Brandon Keck pitched the first six and two-thirds innings for the win, striking out eight.
Travis McCartney had two hits, one a double. Nate King had three base hits.
Red Bulls play
YOUNGSTOWN — The Ohio Red Bulls (7-1) will battle the Ohio Invaders (0-1) today at 7 p.m. at South Field in a Steel Valley Division game of the North American Football League.
Admission is $5 while children 5-and-under are admitted fee.
Then on Aug. 23, the Ohio Red Bulls will play their final game of the season against the New Castle Thunder (1-0) in another Steel Valley Division game at South Field at 7 p.m.

US women’s soccer
CHICAGO — The U.S. women’s soccer team will play Ireland in a three-game exhibition series at Philadelphia, New Jersey and suburban Chicago following the Beijing Olympics.
The series starts in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, moves to East Rutherford, N.J., four days later and finishes Sept. 20 in Bridgeview, Ill.
The United States 5-0 against Ireland dating to 1999.
