Scrappers squander lead; Jammers win
By Greg Gulas
Mahoning wasted a season-high 18 hits in losing, 11-10.
NILES – Joel Staples had four hits and Jamestown used a nine-run eighth inning as the Jammers rallied for an 11-10 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in New York-Penn League action Friday at Eastwood Field.
Scrappers starter P.J. Zocchi was near flawless in his five-inning stint — allowing just one run, striking out seven and scattering four hits — as Mahoning Valley raced to a 7-1 advantage after four innings.
The Scrappers used back-to-back doubles by Cord Phelps and Lonnie Chisenhall in the first inning, the latter scoring both Phelps and Donnie Webb for a 2-0 lead after an inning.
Jamestown cut the Scrappers’ lead in half in its half of the second when Mitch MacDonald’s single scored Staples, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Mahoning Valley made it 4-1 in the second on RBIs by both Ryan Blair and Webb, then added three more runs in the fourth for a six-run lead at the midway point of the game.
Jamestown came back with another run in the sixth when Jeremy Synan scored on an error by Scrappers pitcher Carlos Arias.
With Mahoning Valley leading 7-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Jammers then slowly and methodically pecked away as they scored nine runs on seven hits in their half of the eighth to forge an 11-7 lead.
Synan led the inning off with a double and added another double later in the inning as he scored two of the visitors’ runs.
Scrappers pitcher David Roberts, who absorbed the loss to slip to 1-1, hit two batters in the inning — catcher Robert Taylor and right-fielder Justin Bass — while both Ernie Banks and Kevin Mattison each had two RBIs in the inning.
The Scrappers then made it interesting in their half of the eighth when they scored three runs to pull within a run at 11-10.
Phelps led off the inning with a single to center, Chisenhall then followed with a double with Walter Diaz adding an RBI single to lead off the inning.
A single by Brock Simpson and a run-scoring single by Michael Valadez keyed Mahoning Valley in the inning.
After holding Jamestown in its half of the ninth, the Scrappers were able to put runners on the corners in the bottom half of the ninth. But Jamestown reliever Todd Brandon, who notched his ninth save of the season, struck out both Diaz and Simpson to end the game.
Jamestown (34-21) snapped a four-game losing streak, while Mahoning Valley fell to 24-33 overall and 11-16 at home.
The Scrappers’ 18-hit attack was a season high with both Chisenhall and Phelps registering four-hit nights
Chisenhall had two doubles, as did Phelps, while Phelps scored three times to pace Mahoning Valley.
Staples also had two doubles and scored twice for Jamestown.
