Schools seek parent aid

YOUNGSTOWN —The city school district is looking for parents willing to volunteer their time. Wendy Webb, superintendent, said the district would like to increase parental involvement in various activities during the school day. Parent volunteers must undergo training and a background search, she said. The district is offering a two-day training session at 9 a.m. Aug. 25 and 26 at the central office building, 20 W. Wood St. Participants must attend both days. Those interested can call the administration building at (330) 744-6900.

Spray-painting vandals

GIRARD — Police are looking for vandals who spent Thursday evening spray-painting houses and cars. Properties on Broadway Avenue, St. Clair Street, Lawrence Avenue, Beechwood Drive and Parkview Drive were targeted. Homeowners told police that someone spray-painted words, symbols and lines on homes and cars between 6 and 10 p.m.

2 charged in metal theft

NILES — Two men are charged in the cutting of utility cables for copper. Donald Davis, 33, of Warren Avenue, Niles; and Jonathan Galgozy, 35, of McMyler Avenue, Warren, are charged with four felonies each: interrupting public service, theft, possession of criminal tools and receiving stolen property.

Police were called to the 50th block of North Pleasant Avenue on Thursday morning by a resident who witnessed two men cutting wires from a utility pole outside. Officers tracked the suspects to the corner of Warren Avenue and Butler Street, where one of the men carried a bookbag containing rolledup copper wire. Upon patting down the men, police discovered rubber-coated wire cutters and a pocket knife that appeared to be used for scraping insulation off the copper wire.

YPD promotes Butler

YOUNGSTOWN — Brian Butler, a patrolman for the Youngstown Police Department for eight years, was promoted to detective sergeant on Friday.

Butler, 31, was sworn in by Mayor Jay Williams and presented with his new badges by Chief Jimmy Hughes at city hall.

After graduating from Steubenville High School, Butler went to Jefferson College, where he majored in criminal justice.

He lives in Cornersburg and has been there for six years with his wife, Susan, of Boardman. The Butlers have two children — Braden, 3, and Evan, 19 months.

Hubbard band night set

HUBBARD — The Hubbard High School Marching Band will have its annual Band Night at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the high school football stadium. Marching bands from Hubbard, Mathews, Brookfield, Champion and Liberty will perform.

Salem roadwork planned

SALEM — The Ohio Department of Transportation will begin work next Wednesday to replace approximately 20 culverts located under state Route 558 between Salem and Lisbon. ODOT’s Columbiana County maintenance crews will replace the culverts from Franklin Square to East Fairfield during the daytime.

State Route 558 will be closed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Traffic will be rerouted from the intersection of state Routes 558 and 45, to south on state Route 45 to state Route 517, then east on state Route 517 back to state Route 558, and the reverse.

The work is expected to take about 21 days.

Bank to sponsor picnic

COLUMBIANA — The public is invited when National City Bank provides free hot dogs and soda pop, with face-painting and goody bags for children, at the Firestone Park Gazebo from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The band Rudy and the Professionals will perform.

Man arrested in theft

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Police have arrested a Petersburg man in the theft of three engine blocks from a Main Street auto repair shop.

Jason Himes, 35, was charged in the weekend theft and arraigned Friday in Struthers Court.

Warren library hours

WARREN — The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will be closed Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 for the Labor Day holiday. The closing will affect the Main Library in Warren, bookmobile and homebound services, and all branch libraries (Brookfield, Cortland, Howland, Liberty, and Lordstown).
