Copper, tires catalytic converters stolen in city


YOUNGSTOWN — Theft of salable items, including copper, continues in the city.

Thefts reported Thursday:

• Someone stole a copper fixture from the base of a Verizon cellular phone tower in the 3600 block of Shady Run Road, police said. The fixture, worth $1,500, is used for lightning protection.

• Ziegler Tire on Poland Avenue had 12 large truck tires worth $3,600 stolen. An unknown excavation company placed an order for the tires and a man in a blue Chevrolet pickup arrived and loaded them into the truck. He was told to drive to the office to be billed but pulled out of the lot and headed south on Poland Avenue.

• Roughly 140 feet of copper pipe was taken from the basement of 140 Clarencedale Ave., the owner told police. He said he was in the process of evicting the woman who lived there and then learned she and her children left at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The theft was discovered later in the day when the adjoining tenant realized she had no water.

• Five catalytic converters that had been in a garage in the 600 block of Manchester Avenue were reported missing after a man who had been there to visit his children left, reports show.
