Authorities confiscate eight Dobermans

YOUNGSTOWN — Three adult pure bred Doberman Pinschers and five 1-week-old puppies were rescued from 1745 Atkinson Ave. during a drug raid by the Vice Squad.

When police arrived Tuesday afternoon they found a black male Doberman running loose in the yard and the resident, Mary L. Floyd, yelling “Don’t shoot the dog! The dog won’t hurt you!”

An old Albino male Doberman was tied to a tree in the back yard with no water, police said.

The dog, called Cocaine, “was obviously sick (bones clearly visible through the skin) and had several open wounds,” Patrolman Chad Zubal said in his report. “The dog had trouble keeping its eyes open and it was unsteady on its feet.”

In a bedroom, police found the mother Doberman and her five puppies. The room was covered with feces and urine. It appeared to police that someone had spread bleach throughout the room to mask the odor.

A puppy who had fallen through a void in a wall was retrieved by Patrolman Randall Miller.

Sean Toohey, a Mahoning County deputy dog warden, was called to the scene and took all eight dogs. Toohey said he kept the old all white Doberman at his place overnight.

Toohey said all eight dogs were turned over Wednesday to Kyle Ziegler, humane agent for Animal Charity. Ziegler said the animals are not up for adoption yet, pending the outcome of the charges filed against Floyd.

Floyd, 42, was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court on charges of animal cruelty and failure to register/kennel dogs. She will be back in court Sept. 17 for a pretrial hearing.

John A. Buchannon, 19, of Republic Avenue was arraigned on charges of possession of cocaine and drug abuse marijuana. He will be back in court Aug. 21 for preliminary and pretrial hearings.

Police said Buchannon, who was found in a utility room at Floyd’s house, had $376 and a small bag of marijuana in his pants. Sixteen small bags of crack cocaine were found in the utility room, reports show.
