Youngstown schools seek four-year levy
YOUNGSTOWN — City school district taxpayers will be asked to approve a four-year, non-renewal tax levy in November, instead of the five-year levy the district has tried unsuccessfully to get voters to pass three times.
The millage is still expected to be 9.5, enough to generate about $5.3 million in added revenue annually, enough to get the district out of deficit spending, school officials said.
School board members said they believe voters will find the shorter-term levy more palatable than a five-year taxing plan.
Youngstown has had to borrow some $25 million from the state to cover its budget deficits over the last two years and still owes about $18 million of that debt.
