Part-time New Middletown officer promoted
Council also approved a pact to provide an officer at Springfield schools.

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Village council promoted part-time police Officer Phillip Schaper to full time at Monday’s meeting.
Schaper, who has worked for the village since 2004, will fill the vacancy created by the promotion of Sgt. Vince D’Egidio to chief effective Sept. 1 and will keep the village at three full-time police officers. The third full-timer is Sgt. Ken Goist.
Schaper will be paid $14 hourly, an increase from the $11.64 he receives as a part-timer. Council will negotiate a contract with him later.
In other business, council:
UApproved a one-year contract with the Springfield Local School District to provide a police officer during the 2008-09 school year for $120 per day, up from $115 last school year. Goist is the officer, and the village pays his benefits. He works for the village when school is not in session.
UIncreased court costs from $45 to $55 for Mayor’s Court to comply with a new state law. Court costs are paid to the state.
UAgreed to pay Tancer’s Tree Service, Springfield Township, $1,200 to remove two dead oak trees and trim the other trees in Welker Park.
