Area twirlers win national team and solo honors
BOARDMAN — Northern Strut Twirling Teams, based within Astre Total Fitness and Rehab Center, ended the season by capturing numerous honors at the Marching Auxiliaries National Championship competitions in Fort Worth, Texas.
The local group, which specializes in both recreational and competitive baton twirling and flag twirling, was named the 2008 Marching Auxiliaries National Senior Ensemble Champions, and two members, Meghan Susko and Rebecca Platt, took top honors in individual competitions.
In the seniors mall ensemble majorette division, the duo of Susko and Platt performed a team twirl, which received a Superior 1 rating, and won the first-place National Small Ensemble Champion title. Both twirlers also received Superior 1 ratings for their solo performances in the Solo Senior Division.
The twirling teams have been showcased in the Youngstown State University Homecoming Parade, Poland Memorial Day Parade, Canfield Fourth of July Parade, the Canfield Fair and the Citrus Bowl. Members have also received honors as soloists and as a group in MA, NBTA, and TU competitions.
Serving as coach for the twirling teams is Janet Gbur of Canfield, a former YSU Majorette, who also serves as adviser to Boardman Spartan Feature Twirlers. The instructors are Jessica Bowers and Jillian Wollet, and colorguard/flag instruction is by Phemie Colonna.
