August 1968: Two Mahoning Valley alternate delegates to the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, Jack C. Hunter, then a Youngstown councilman, and Beverly M. Atkinson of Warren, made it clear they were supporting Ohio’s favorite son, Gov. James A. Rhodes. The presidential nomination went to Richard M. Nixon, who selected Spiro Agnew as his running mate.
