NFL ROUNDUP \ News notes

Steelers: Veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich, 28, was signed Sunday, after he and Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player, worked out at Saint Vincent College. Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone in Friday nights 16-10 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Heinz Field. Batch, who is to have surgery today, is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Browns: Former Ohio State defensive back Brandon Mitchell and Travis Key, another defensibe back were signed Sunday, while safety Steve Cargile was waived. Also, wideout Braylon Edwards spent Saturday night at the Cleveland Clinic and was released Sunday afternoon after a sprint in his socks when fellow receiver Donte’ Stallworth stepped on the back of his foot and opened a cut that required stitches.

Saints: Rookie Adrian Arrington missed his second straight practice with a sprained toe Sunday and coach Sean Payton said the injury may be serious enough to sideline the former Michigan wide receiver for more than a week.

Texans: Running back Ahman Green will likely sit out a preseason game against New Orleans this week with a pulled groin, but coach Gary Kubiak said Sunday the injury isn’t serious. Green was hurt on the Texans’ first offensive play in Saturday night’s 19-16 preseason win over Denver.

Giants: Plaxico Burress said he won’t practice until his troublesome right ankle is healthy. “Of course I definitely want to be out there,” Burress said Sunday after watching the morning workout at the University at Albany.

Broncos: Coach Mike Shanahan eased his grueling training camp routine this year in response to the NFL’s reduced roster limits. It hasn’t kept his players out of the training room. In the first seven snaps of Saturday night’s 19-16 preseason loss at Houston, the Broncos lost starting linebacker Boss Bailey, their biggest free agent signing, with a sprained right ankle, and his backup, special teams ace Louis Green, with a concussion. Denver already had four key players sitting out in cornerback Champ Bailey (hamstring), center Tom Nalen (knee), safety Hamza Abdullah (groin) and defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (knee). Right tackle Erik Pears, who has been slowed by a bad back, played only one series against the Texans.
