Ohio Titans play Walthers-Mallonns for NABF title
YOUNGSTOWN — The unbeaten Ohio Fightin’ Titans take on Canton Walthers Mallonns at Pemberton-Donnell Park today at 10 a.m. for the NABF Major Regional baseball tournament (19-older) championship.
If Canton wins, a second game in the double elimination event is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Titans eliminated Toledo All American Coach 11-0 Saturday.
In an early contest, Steve’s Sports scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to eliminate Roth Brothers 8-4 at Pemberton.
Roth Brothers actually took the lead 4-3, when it scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Josh Conkey led off the inning with a double. Rob Tamburro singled, putting runners at first and second. Eric Jones singled home Conkey. After a strikeout, Rick Gozur singled home Jones.
Four walks, a sacrifice, a single and a double by Wayne Tyus produced the four runs for Steve’s in the ninth.
Gozur finished the contest with three singles. Tamburro also hit a double and Porter another single. Keith McLeod, Edward Ramos, Mark Lubline and Wallace Richardson each had two hits for Steve’s Sports.
Leading 2-0, the Titans sent 13 players to the plate in the fifth inning to oust Toledo. Mike Novak hit a single and a double during the big inning, which included two walks, two errors, a hit batter, three singles and a double by Jim Putko.
Canton Walthers Mallonns, which lost early in the day to the Titans 13-10, bounced back to eliminated Steve’s Sports 10-6 to stay alive in the double elimination tournament.
Novak, Putko, Nick Evilsizer, Mike Janos and Gabe Rios each had two hits for the Titans in the win over Walthers Mallonns.
Ryan Baechel’s solo home run was a key hit as Walthers Mallonn scored three times in the seventh against Steve’s Sports to put the game out of reach.
