Notes from eastwood field
What’s in a name: The three cities which comprise Tri-City are Troy, Albany and Schenectady. The trio of cities also make up New York state’s Capital District. The ValleyCats, an affiliate of the Houston Astros, play their home games on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College located in Troy. Prior to 2001, the franchise was located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Crowd pleasers: When it comes to minor league baseball, a winning team does not always guarantee success at the box office. Despite having the best record in the NY-PL, the Jamestown Jammers are averaging just 1,578 fans per home contest. In their three-game series against the Scrappers earlier this week, the Jammers drew 4,812 fans, including a crowd of just 942 on Friday night. Batavia, which owns the second-best record in the league, is averaging just 1,222 fans per home contest. Meanwhile, Aberdeen — which is in last place in the in the McNamara Division — is averaging 6,539 fans at each home game.
Odds and ends: The Scrappers continue to lead the league in walks. Scrappers batters have reached base 212 times this season via the free pass. Vermont is second in the league with 188 walks. ... Hudson Valley leads the league with 72 stolen bases. The rest of the league is averaging 38 stolen bases per team. ... Scrappers outfielder Juan Valdes has been promoted to Lake County. He was replaced on the roster with Tim Fedroff, an outfielder out of North Carolina who was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 June draft. ... Scrappers infielder Isaias Velasquez went 0-for-3 on Friday, snapping his 17-game hitting streak. Velasquez has reached base in his last 27 games, a league-high.
