Bike crash injures teen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — An accident involving a dirt bike resulted in a 14-year-old boy being taken to a Pittsburgh hospital Saturday afternoon.
Pennsylvania State Police said the New Castle teenager, whose name was not released, was riding west on his dirt bike on Vance Road in North Beaver Township at 2:45 p.m. when he traveled into the path of Brian K. Becker of Wampum, Pa., who was driving north on Pa. Route 18.
The teen struck Becker’s vehicle on the right side, which resulted in the youth being thrown from the bike.
State police said the teenager, with critical injuries, was taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Neither Becker, who used his seat belt, nor two children in his car, who were in car seats, were injured.
AFL-CIO holds training
BOARDMAN — The Mahoning/Trumbull County AFL-CIO sponsors a voter registration training class Monday at The Operating Engineers Hall, 291 McClurg Road. Each local union from the area is encouraged to send one member for training. The class will be conducted by Ron Massullo of the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. The voter registration portion is nonpartisan and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for registration and the class is at 6:15 p.m.
Airstream club rally set
LINESVILLE, Pa. — The Mahoning Valley Ohio Unit of Airstream’s WBCCI Club will have a three-day rally beginning Thursday at Mallard’s Landing here. The unit has members from Lake Erie to East Liverpool. Members own any recreational vehicle manufactured by Airstream. To join the club, contact membership chairman Bob White, (330) 792-9669.
Old Timers Day planned
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Old Timers Day will be Wednesday at Cascade Park Pavilion. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and includes lunch, dancing, prizes and souvenirs. Admission is free to all senior citizens. Attendees may register the morning of the event.
Lunch will be served at noon. Sing-along entertainment will be provided by organist Ray Melcer. The Mickey Natale Band will perform. Frank Bonfield, a former New Castle city councilman, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Greetings will be delivered by Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo and several county officials. Phillip Kelly of the New Castle Area Honor Guard will lead the pledge of allegiance. The Rev. John Petrarulo of St. Vitus Church is scheduled to give the invocation.
Council voting on zoning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City council plans to vote on proposed changes to the city’s zoning ordinance at its regular public meeting Aug. 28. The session will be at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at the City Building, 230 N. Jefferson St. The proposed revisions would change areas in the city’s 8th Ward from residential to light industrial.
