Athletics 4, Tigers 2

DETROIT — Rookie reliever Brad Ziegler tied the Athletics’ record for consecutive scoreless innings and Oakland snapped a 10-game losing streak. Emil Brown homered and Rajai Davis drove in two runs for Oakland, which hadn’t won since July 27 against Texas. Marcus Thames homered for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last eight.

White Sox 5, Red Sox 3

CHICAGO — Mark Buehrle took a shutout into the eighth and Chicago handed Jon Lester his first loss in 21‚Ñ2 months. The AL Central leaders hung on after Dustin Pedroia hit a three-run homer off Octavio Dotel in the eighth. Lester (10-4) suffered his first loss since May 25 after going 7-0 in his previous 11 starts. He allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings.

Orioles 9, Rangers 1

BALTIMORE — Jeremy Guthrie allowed one run in seven innings to win his third straight start and Kevin Millar homered twice for Baltimore, sending Texas to its third straight loss. Brian Roberts, Juan Castro and Ramon Hernandez each had two RBIs for the Orioles, who have won seven of 11. Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, one short of his career high.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 3, Marlins 0

NEW YORK — Oliver Perez pitched two-hit ball for seven innings, David Wright and Carlos Delgado homered as New York took the first game of a key series. Wright hit a two-run shot in the first off Ricky Nolasco (11-7), helping the Mets win consecutive games for the first time since July 23-25.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2, 11 innings

CHICAGO — Henry Blanco singled home the winning run with the bases loaded in the 11th inning. Jim Edmonds, who spent eight seasons with St. Louis before he was dealt last offseason, hit a pair of solo homers for the Cubs, connecting in the second and seventh innings off Braden Looper.

Astros 9, Reds 5, 10 innings

CINCINNATI — Carlos Lee hit a two-run double, and Hunter Pence followed with a two-run homer in the 10th inning for Houston. Miguel Tejada doubled and Lance Berkman walked with two outs against Francisco Cordero (4-4). Lee followed with a drive to right-center that Corey Patterson almost caught with diving effort, but the ball dribbled from his glove and both runners scored to give Lee 1,001 career RBIs. Pence then added his second home run in two nights and 16th overall.

Brewers 5, Nationals 0

MILWAUKEE — CC Sabathia pitched a five-hitter to remain unbeaten with the Brewers. It was the ninth straight win for Sabathia, who has not lost in 12 starts since June 5. In seven starts with the Brewers, since being acquired from Cleveland, he is 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA. Mike Cameron and J.J. Hardy homered for the Brewers.
