The driver said he had just two beers.

YOUNGSTOWN — A legless 65-year-old Boardman man naked from the waist down was charged with driving drunk after first hitting a car at the Market Street/Indianola Avenue intersection around 10 p.m. Thursday and then hitting another one a few minutes later at the Market Street/Warren Avenue intersection, police said.

John E. Carlon, of Hunters Glen, was arraigned Friday in municipal court on charges of operating a vehicle impaired, failure to maintain an assured clear distance and failure to stop after an accident.

He will be back in court Sept. 24 for a pretrial hearing.

The first crash was handled by Patrolwoman Shawna-Cie Ott, who learned from the victim that a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, after impact, continued northbound on Market. Once Carlon was determined to be the driver who fled, a citation was issued.

Patrolman Ron Barber, who handled the second crash, first spoke to the driver of the car that had been hit from behind while at the red light and then spoke to Carlon. Carlon told the officer that he did not see the red light and hit the car in front of him.

While talking to Carlon, Barber noted that the man, who has no legs, was not wearing pants or underwear. A pair of shorts was on the front seat.

Carlon, who was slurring his speech, said he’d had two beers at home and was driving home, even though he was traveling north on Market, not south toward Boardman, reports show.

Carlon, who uses a mechanical device to drive, was removed from his car and placed in the wheelchair he carries in his car.

Based on Carlon’s physical condition, no field sobriety tests were given.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for a blood-alcohol concentration test.

Carlon was released to a relative, and his car was towed and held for traffic investigators.
