Injured officer released from hospital

YOUNGSTOWN — The police officer who crashed his cruiser into a tree near the Par-3 golf course on McCollum Roadwas sent home from the hospital Friday.

Patrolman Ron Jankowski, 33, had been in serious condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center after the crash at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday. His condition was upgraded to stable Thursday. A report of the event lists Jankowski’s condition at the time of accident as “physical impairment,” though the impairment is not described, and quotes him as saying he doesn’t remember anything. Contributing circumstance is listed as unknown.

No drugs or alcohol were suspected, and his speed was estimated as 20 mph on dry pavement.

The officer was eastbound on McCollum when he ran off the road to the left and struck a fire hydrant. The car, a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, then ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to the crash report.

Jankowski, according to the report, did not have on his safety belt and the car’s air bag did not deploy. Damage to the right front of the car is described as disabling.
