Austintown to dedicate 9/11 Memorial Park
AUSTINTOWN— The public is invited when the township’s beautification committee dedicates 9/11 Memorial Park.
The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. today with guest speakers John and Mary Fetchet from Connecticut. After their son died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, they founded the Web site www.voicesofsept11.org to remember those lost in the attacks.
Elected officials will make speeches.
In the park is a gazebo, memorial stones dedicated to the victims of terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and artifacts from the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93.
Community members are encouraged to attend.
Phone lines vandalized
WEATHERSFIELD — Some area customers were without telephone service for a short time after vandals cut a line.
AT T reported to township police about 3:45 p.m. Thursday that vandals, possibly using a hacksaw, cut about three- quarters of the way through a line along state Route 169.
No arrest has been made.
Route 224 lanes altered
BOARDMAN — Throughout the morning hours today, U.S. Route 224 eastbound will be reduced to one lane at the Tippecanoe Road/Lockwood Boulevard intersection. It will return to two lanes by about noon.
From about noon until further notice, the intersection will have two lanes of traffic in each direction plus a mutual left turn lane.
This work is part of a $4.1 million project to widen the approaches of the U.S. 224 intersection with Tippecanoe/Lockwood. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by July 2009.
Air Force reservists to deploy to Middle East
VIENNA — Sixty-eight Air Force reservists from the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station are scheduled to deploy Sunday to the Middle East.
The reservists are scheduled to take off at about 11 a.m. and will be performing duties for about five weeks in support of the War on Terrorism through Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
The reservists are air crew members and aircraft maintenance personnel.
As of Friday, about 72 members of the 910th remained deployed overseas.
Road closing planned
LEAVITTSBURG — Nelson-Moser Road, from Park to Allen-Smith roads in Warren and Braceville townships in Trumbull County, will be closed for a bridge rehabilitation from Monday through Sept. 26, according to the Trumbull County Engineer’s office.
The recommended detour is west on Park, south on Diehl South Road, southwest on state Route 5, west on state Route 82 and north on Newton Falls-Braceville Road to Nelson-Moser.
Wal-Mart holds relays
BAZETTA — Wal-Mart is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to host mini 12-hour Relays for Life from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at its stores at 2016 Millenium Blvd. in the township and 3200 Atlantic Blvd. N.E. in Canton.
Some of the activities planned include opening and closing ceremonies, a cancer survivor’s reception, children’s activities, frozen T-shirt and doughnut-eating contests, a scavenger hunt, and a water balloon toss.
Fundraising activities include a dart game, lollipop tree, luminaries and a pie-in-the-face contest.
Portable toilets defaced
WARREN — A 16-year-old Warren boy has been charged with defacing the portable toilets at the Warren Community Amphitheater.
He was charged with a felony because the toilets are government property.
Police said that they are investigating a similar case involving three juveniles on bicycles at the amphitheater.
