Rabid cat euthanized after biting woman

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Allegheny County Health Department says it has caught and euthanized a rabid cat that bit a woman who lives in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park.

The woman who was bitten Friday is being treated for rabies and has not developed the disease. Rabies is usually fatal if not treated, but can be counteracted with injections soon after a bite.

The health department has distributed oral vaccines in wooded areas and ditches near where the cat was found. Those doses are meant for raccoons and any other animals that might have encountered the cat.

But the health department also wants to know if any other people came into contact with the cat, which had long, black hair and a white chest.
