Rogner competes
EUGENE, ORE. — Youngstown State women’s golfer Katie Rogner of Warren failed to qualify for match play competition at the 108th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships here at the Eugene Country Club Tuesday.
Rogner, who was the YSU women’s team most valuable player as a freshman last season, shot rounds of 81 and 85 for a 166 total in medal play. The leaders were at 140.

Mount Union football
ALLIANCE — Mount Union College’s football team tops both Ohio Athletic Conference media and coaches preseason polls, announced at the league’s media day.
The Purple Raiders, also the consensus preseason No. 1 team in the nation, have won the last 16-straight OAC football titles.
Mount opens the season at home on Sept. 6 at 1:30 against preseason No. 10 in the nation, St. John Fisher.
In the OAC coaches’ poll, the Raiders were trailed by Ohio Northern, Capital and John Carroll and Otterbein which tied for fourth.
Capital was second in the OAC media poll, followed by Ohio Northern, John Carroll and Baldwin-Wallace.
Hubbard football tickets available
HUBBARD — Hubbard High School is now selling football tickets during school hours and season tickets are available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m.
The Hubbard Athletic Dept. will conduct a canned-food drive at home football games.
Howland passes
HOWLAND — All-sport passes for Howland senior citizens interested in watching Howland high school and middle school sporting events are now available in the high school activities office.
The cost is $10 per pass and any Howland resident age 65 or older is eligible to obtain one.
Last year’s pass is still good for all fall 2008 events but a new pass will be required for winter and spring sports.
Bicycle tour
CHAMPION — The World of Wildlife Bicycle Tour takes place Sunday. Event registration is 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Trumbull campus of Kent State University.
Except for the first and last miles, riders will use the Western Reserve Greenway in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties to ride 20-, 40- or 62 miles. Snack stops are included in the registration fee. Volunteers will provide assistance and answer questions about wildlife along the Greenway.

Penguins begin new arena Aug. 14
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins will break ground on their new $290 million arena next week.
Gov. Ed Rendell will be among the dignitaries in attendance.
The new arena will be built across the street from 47-year-old Mellon Arena, the oldest and one of the smallest arenas in the NHL.
The Penguins hope the arena will be complete by the start of the 2010-2011 season.
The owner of the city’s planned slot machine casino is expected to contribute $7.5 million a year for 30 years toward the cost of the arena.
