Poland ousted; Roth AA champ
The 11-team NABF Major regional for players 19-over has its draw tonight at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
AKRON — Although Poland Community Baseball’s all-star fast pitch team out-hit Elyria in a game that totaled only six hits, the area representative in the Junior League (13-14) girls Central Region semifinal came home on the short end Tuesday.
Poland finished with a 3-1 record in the tournament after losing to Elyria, 1-0.
“We out-hit them, but didn’t put up as many runs,” Poland manager Jim Serich said.
After producing just one hit in six innings, Poland got three more hits, but had the tying run thrown out at home plate when Emily Chandler was cut down during a close play in the top of the seventh.
Elyria’s lone run came in the fourth, when Cynthia Woodward had a lead-off triple followed by Alysa Barker’s RBI bunt.
Chandler, Maura Bobby and Kasie Serich had singles, while Kelsey Malenic doubled for Poland.
Starter Kasie Serich struck out six and allowed just one hit over four innings before Chandler pitched two shutout innings.
Elyria will play Illinois in the championship game today, with the winner advancing to the World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

YOUNGSTOWN — Scoring seven runs in the first two innings provided all the push Roth Brothers needed in winning the Youngstown Class AA League championship in a best-of-seven series.
Eric Jones had a three-run double in the first-inning, while Jim Putko also had three RBIs for the champs, who won the deciding game, 8-0, at Pemberton Park.
Starter Jonathan Habuda allowed just two hits for the win and Keith Jackson added three scoreless innings for Roth, which took the series, 4-2.
Matt Yarab and Dane Dobson had the lone hits for Metros.

YOUNGSTOWN — Jim Jaskowak pitched a one-hitter and Eric Pirtz had a double and two singles to power Metros in the fifth game of the best-of-seven series.
Joe Iacobucci’s three RBIs were also instrumental in the victory. Rick Gozur had Roth’s only hit.

WARREN — Craig Dobos had two hits, including a triple, leading Elite Shockers over the Mahoning Valley Knights, 4-3, to win their playoff series, two games to one.
Cory Hinzman added a double and single for Elite, while Justin Street singled twice.
Mark Yartz picked up the win in relief and Steve Boxler earned a save.
Rick DiMuzio had three hits for the Knights, including a double, while Josh Swipas doubled and singled. Ryan Monti also hit a double.
