CANFIELD — Mahoning County Green Team, in cooperation with the Canfield Township trustees and Canfield Fairgrounds officials, is sponsoring an electronics recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Canfield Fairgrounds for Mahoning County residents and small businesses. Enter through gate nine.
Computers, monitors, printers, table-top fax and copiers, DVD and VCR units, keyboards, stereos, radios and related electronics will be accepted for free. There is a limit of 10 electronics per vehicle. TV sets will be accepted for a fee based on screen size. For details, call the Green Team at (330) 740-2060 or go to www.greenteam.cc.
Howland sport passes
HOWLAND — All-Sport Passes for Howland senior citizens interested in watching Howland high school and middle school sporting events are available in the high school Activities Office beginning today.
The cost is $10 per pass, and any Howland resident age 65 or older is eligible to obtain one. The pass is good for all but tournament events.
Last year’s pass is still good for all fall 2008 events, but a new pass will be required for winter and spring sports.
Hayes school break-in
YOUNGSTOWN — Two open windows were found at Hayes Middle School on Ford Avenue after the burglar alarm sounded at 11:45 p.m. Monday, police said. Patrolman Josh Kelly and his dog, Helo, were called to check the building for suspects. No one was found. The custodian arrived and discovered that a vending machine had been broken into and an office ransacked. A more thorough inventory is planned.
Wildlife bicycle tour
CHAMPION — WOW 2008, the fourth annual World of Wildlife Bicycle Tour, takes place Sunday. Event registration is 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Trumbull campus of Kent State University.
Except for the first and last miles, riders will use the Western Reserve Greenway in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties to ride 20, 40 or 62 miles. Snack stops are included in the registration fee. Volunteers will provide assistance and answer questions about wildlife along the Greenway. The ride will occur rain or shine.

Poster contest winner
WARREN — John Payiavlas of Lincoln Elementary School in Warren has won the Ohio Federation of the Soil Water Conservation District conservation poster contest.
Payiavlas won first for the second- and third-grade competition using oils and pastels. His poster will be sent to the national soil and water conservation district competition being held in February 2009.
The conservation theme for 2008 was “Water Is Life,” and children from kindergarten through grade 12 from schools throughout the state participated. Crayons, watercolors, magic markers or other methods of writing, drawing or coloring were used to create a flat or two-dimensional effect.

Fire destroys house
YOUNGSTOWN — The vacant house at 230 Byron St. on the East Side was deliberately set on fire around 3 a.m. Tuesday, the fire department said. Firefighters found the second floor in flames when they arrived. Neighbors said the people who had lived there moved out Monday. Damage was set at $6,000, a total loss.
