YSU settles suit with former general counsel for $675,000

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University will pay $675,000 to its former general counsel to end a federal gender discrimination and retaliation lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed in 2005 by Atty. Sandra Denman, who served as YSU general counsel from 1994 until June 2004.

She alleged that the university illegally paid female employees less than their male counterparts and claimed that, when she tried to bring the issue to the attention of university officials, her contract as general counsel wasn’t renewed and she was transferred to a lower-paying position within the university.

YSU denied Denman’s accusations, and said the settlement in no way is an admission of any wrongdoing on the part of the university.
