MLB ROUNDUP Saturday’s other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Royals 9, White Sox 7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jose Guillen and Billy Butler both homered off an ineffective Mark Buehrle, and Esteban German had a two-run triple to lead the Royals. Buehrle (8-10), a Royals nemesis much of his career, had his shortest and worst start of the year on a day the White Sox hit four home runs. Miguel Olivo also homered for the Royals, whose 19 hits in the sweltering heat were their most in almost two years.
Yankees 8, Angels 2
NEW YORK — Mike Mussina retired the final 17 batters he faced, Jose Molina hit one of New York’s four homers and the Yankees snapped Los Angeles’ five-game winning streak. Alex Rodriguez, Wilson Betemit and Bobby Abreu all homered and Mussina (14-7), a six-time Gold Glove winner, made several stellar plays on the mound to help the Yankees to their second victory in seven games, and a win in front of 54,170 fans on Old-Timers’ Day.
Red Sox 12, Athletics 2
BOSTON — Jason Bay hit his first home run with Boston, Kevin Youkilis added a pair of two-run homers and the Red Sox cruised past Oakland. Bay finished 1-for-4 and has reached base safely in six of his first 11 at-bats with Boston. After getting swept by the Angels earlier in the week, the Red Sox have won two in a row.
Rays 9, Tigers 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rookie Evan Longoria homered and drove in three runs and right-hander Andy Sonnanstine won for the first time in nearly a month. Carl Crawford contributed a two-run single for the Rays, who have won four straight and set a franchise record for home wins in a season (42) before a sellout crowd of 36,048 at Tropicana Field.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers 4, Braves 2
ATLANTA — CC Sabathia pitched deep into the game in another terrific outing for Milwaukee and Prince Fielder hit two home runs. The Brewers equaled a club record with their ninth straight road win and stayed four games back of NL Central-leading Chicago. Sabathia (5-0) struck out nine in 81‚Ñ3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits. He has a 1.88 ERA in six starts with Milwaukee, which acquired him from the Cleveland Indians last month.
Phillies 2, Cardinals 1
ST. LOUIS — Joe Blanton won his first game since joining Philadelphia in a mid-July trade, riding home runs from Ryan Howard and Greg Dobbs. Dobbs, who leads the majors with 20 pinch hits, hit his fourth of the season on the first pitch of the third from Braden Looper (10-9). Howard hit his 31st for his major league leading 96th RBI with two outs in the fourth.
Marlins 5, Rockies 3
MIAMI — Ricky Nolasco struck out a career-high 13 and Jeff Baker hit a two-run homer to lead Florida. Nolasco (11-6) allowed three runs and four hits over eight innings to earn his first win in five appearances since July 7. He didn’t walk a batter before turning it over to Kevin Gregg, who pitched the ninth for his 24th save in 30 chances. Baker finished with three RBIs, his homer off Colorado starter Valerio De Los Santos (0-1) giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Baker drove in another run in the third.
Nationals 10, Reds 6
WASHINGTON — Pete Orr picked up his first RBIs in more than 15 months, slapping a pinch-hit, two-run single into left field in the seventh inning to put Washington ahead to stay. Orr’s single capped a four-run inning and gave the Nationals something they haven’t had since June — a two-game winning streak at home. Washington had dropped nine straight overall before beating the Reds on Friday; now they’ll be going for the series sweep.
Astros 5, Mets 4, 10 innings
HOUSTON — Lance Berkman raced home when Darin Erstad lined out to left in the 10th inning and the Astros beat the Mets after tying it on a memorable play in the ninth inning. New York was leading 4-2 when Houston loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Geoff Blum then lined a single to left and Hunter Pence raced around third, right on Mark Loretta’s heels.
