SALEM — The Arthritis Foundation and the Salem Community Center will co-sponsor a free lecture called “Arthritis of the Foot and Ankle: Replacement Surgery.”

This lecture will be presented by Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, DPM, FACFAS, at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave.

Akron Children’s Hospital adopts nicotine-free hiring

AKRON — Akron Children’s Hospital is joining the ranks of about 6,000 other companies nationwide and establishing a new nicotine-free hiring policy.

The policy, which was implemented August 1, will add a nicotine test to the hospital’s existing health and wellness screenings for new hires.

Two years ago, Akron Children’s adopted a tobacco-free policy that banned the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products on hospital property, including parking areas, outdoor grounds and off-site locations.

New breast center offers advanced care for women

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC will further expand its range of services focused on the health needs of women in Mercer County with the opening of the new Magee Comprehensive Breast Center at UPMC Horizon on Friday.

The Magee Comprehensive Breast Center at UPMC Horizon offers women across the region access to an integrated breast program under the care of the nation’s top provider of women’s health services – Magee-Womens Hospital.

The center is located at the Womancare Center, 875 N. Hermitage Road, and is affiliated with the Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Program. For more information call (724) 347-7700.

Program for volunteers

ALLIANCE — Alliance Community Hospital, 200 E. State St., will host its monthly “Ventures in Volunteering” orientation program for incoming volunteers on Tuesday in the 2-A conference room.

The program will begin at 4 p.m. and last until around 7:30 p.m.

Each month a “Ventures in Volunteering” orientation program takes place at the hospital to introduce potential volunteers to the mechanics of hospital volunteering.

CPR and first aid

BOARDMAN — The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, 8392 Tod Ave., is hosting an adult CPR course on Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

On Thursday the American Red Cross will offer a basic first aid training course from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The purpose of the first aid training class is to give individuals the knowledge and skills to recognize and provide basic first aid care until medical professionals arrive.
