ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria hit solo homers and Tampa Bay’s bullpen limited Detroit to one hit over the last 41‚Ñ3 innings, helping the AL East-leading Rays beat the Tigers. Grant Balfour (3-1) struck out three of the four batters he faced in relief of All-Star Scott Kazmir to get the victory.

NEW YORK — Torii Hunter hit an RBI single off Mariano Rivera in the ninth, Ervin Santana pitched eight stellar innings and the Angels won their fifth straight game. Rivera again struggled in a non-save situation, giving up a run for the third straight time no save was involved, and fourth in the last six.

HOUSTON — Pinch-hitter Mark Loretta hit a tie-breaking grand slam off Aaron Heilman in the eighth inning for Houston. Kazuo Matsui, Brandon Backe and Carlos Lee had solo homers, all leading off innings against Pedro Martinez, who made his first start since July 12. Martinez returned to the mound for the first time since the death of his father on July 23, and allowed five hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

ATLANTA — Jeff Suppan pitched seven scoreless innings, and Mike Cameron and Prince Fielder hit third-inning home runs as Milwaukee snapped a five-game losing streak. Suppan (6-7) gave up five hits with three walks and one strikeout. Brian Shouse and Guillermo Mota each pitched an inning to complete the Brewers’ fifth shutout.
Rockies 5, Marlins 2
MIAMI — Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two hits in seven shutout innings to win his fourth straight start for Colorado. The right-hander struck out 10 and kept the Marlins hitless until Dan Uggla’s leadoff single in the fifth. Manny Corpas pitched a scoreless eighth for Colorado, but Josh Willingham had an RBI single off Taylor Buchholz in the ninth. Buchholz was replaced Brian Fuentes, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Mike Jacobs between a strikeout and a popup for his 19th save.

WASHINGTON — Odalis Perez pitched into the eighth inning to earn his first home win and Washington ended a nine-game losing streak. It was Cincinnati’s first game since it traded outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Reliever Nick Masset, one of two players acquired by the Reds in the deal, allowed one hit in three scoreless innings.

ST. LOUIS — Ryan Ludwick homered twice and had four hits and Joe Mather added a three-run shot for St. Louis. Kyle Lohse cruised through five innings to help end his former team’s five-game winning streak, and Jason Isringhausen earned his first save since May 5.
