Penguins’ men golfers finish 3rd


LEBANON, Ohio — The Youngstown State men’s golf team finished third at the Horizon League championships, which finished Tuesday at Shaker Run Golf Club and finished third.

The Penguins had a three-round (54 holes) total of 896 (303-296-297). Cleveland State won the championship with 892 while Detroit finished second with 893. YSU had the lowest team totals in the second and third rounds.

Leading the Penguins with a sixth-place finish was freshman Michael Turner, who carded a 223 (75-74-74) and was named to the all-tournament team.

Freshman Spenser Sulzener finished ninth with a 224 (74-74-76).

Junior Ryan Stoke finished 12th after firing a 227 (81-73-73), and following the championships was named to the Horizon League first team.

Stocke averaged a team-best 72.9 per 18 holes over 34 rounds this season. His season-low round was a 68 at the IPFW Fall Classic.

He is just the second YSU golfer to earn league all-star honors twice in his career, joining former standout Nate Komsa.

Also Tuesday, sophomore Tim Morrow was 14th with a 228 (75-75-78) and senior Ross Beal was 19th with a 232 (79-79-74).

The finish was YSU’s best at the league meet since coming in second in 2006.
