MLB ROUNDUP Tuesday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 6, Yankees 4

NEW YORK — Gary Sheffield and Curtis Granderson homered in the third inning, sending old pro Kenny Rogers and Detroit over road-weary New York. Magglio Ordonez got Detroit going with a two-run single off struggling right-hander Phil Hughes, and the $139 million Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games as they try to recover from an 0-7 start.

Orioles 7, Rays 4

BALTIMORE — Garrett Olson took a shutout into the seventh inning, and Baltimore ended Tampa Bay’s six-game winning streak. Aubrey Huff homered and Melvin Mora had two RBIs for the Orioles, who broke a tie atop the division with Tampa Bay. Both teams usually reside in the lower tier of the standings, but each has gotten off to an unexpected solid start while Boston, the New York Yankees and Toronto have struggled.

Red Sox 1, Blue Jays 0

BOSTON — Kevin Youkilis lined a run-scoring single to center field in the ninth, ending a brilliant pitching duel between Roy Halladay and Jon Lester and giving Boston a win over Toronto. Halladay (2-4) retired the first two batters in the inning before walking David Ortiz. Manny Ramirez looped a single to center, sending Ortiz to second. Youkilis then hit the ball in front of center fielder Vernon Wells and Ortiz chugged around third. But instead of a close play at the plate, he scored easily as Wells dropped the ball.

Twins 3, White Sox 1

MINNEAPOLIS — Boof Bonser picked up Minnesota’s beleaguered starting rotation with the group’s first win in 10 days to lead the Twins over Chicago. Bonser (2-4) gave up a homer to Joe Crede among six hits and struck out eight to earn the win, the first by a Twins starter since April 19. Jason Kubel homered and Joe Nathan picked up his eighth save for the Twins. Gavin Floyd (2-1) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings and Crede hit his AL-leading seventh homer of the season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 7, Padres 4

PHILADELPHIA — Cole Hamels had an impressive outing and Philadelphia denied Greg Maddux his 350th career victory. Hamels (3-3) allowed five hits, two runs and struck out six in 71‚Ñ3 innings. Tom Gordon worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and the Phillies scored four insurance runs in the bottom half. Maddux (2-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in 61‚Ñ3 innings. The four-time Cy Young award winner was trying for the third start to become the ninth pitcher in big league history to reach 350 wins. Carlos Ruiz had a two-run double and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs added an RBI double as the Phillies broke it open in the eighth against Glendon Rusch and Kevin Cameron. Scott Hairston hit a pair of homers for San Diego.

Nationals 6, Braves 3

WASHINGTON — Slumping Ryan Zimmerman spent some time working with Barry Larkin before the game, and then had a season-high three hits, including a homer and tie-breaking two-run double, to lead Washington past Atlanta. Washington won for the fourth time in five games. The Braves, whose highlight was Chipper Jones’ eighth homer, have lost three straight games. Zimmerman and Nick Johnson hit consecutive solo shots in the third inning off Tom Glavine, who was coming off his first trip to the disabled list in a 22-season career. Zimmerman hadn’t homered since April 2. Then, in Washington’s four-run seventh, Zimmerman hit his double off reliever Blaine Boyer (0-3), who was charged with four runs and got only one out. Saul Rivera (2-1) got the win by pitching a scoreless seventh.

Dodgers 7, Marlins 6

MIAMI — Jeff Kent’s two-out single drove in Andre Ethier to break a ninth-inning tie and help Los Angeles win its fourth straight game. Ethier had walked with one out against Kevin Gregg (3-1) and took second on a groundout. Joel Beimel (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances. The Dodgers won even though Derek Lowe was unable to protect a 6-1 lead. Dan Uggla hit his fourth homer for the Marlins, and they scored three unearned runs in the fifth for a 6-all tie.

Cardinals 7, Reds 2

ST. LOUIS — Joel Pineiro pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and St. Louis jumped on rookie Johnny Cueto early in a victory over Cincinnati. Troy Glaus and Rick Ankiel combined for four hits and five RBIs their first two at-bats for the Cardinals, who scored three runs in the first and four in the second. Skip Schumaker tied his career best with four hits and Albert Pujols was 0-for-4 to end a nine-game hitting streak, but walked off Josh Fogg in the eighth and has reached base safely in all 28 games. Cueto (1-3) allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in only 12‚Ñ3 innings in his sixth career start.
