Jackson-Milton, Southern unite for 36 strikeouts


McDonald blanked Leetonia while Boardman bounced Perry, 10-1.

NORTH JACKSON — Opposing pitchers Ryan Talbot and Tom Smith combined for 36 strikeouts over nine innings as the Southern High baseball team defeated Jackson-Milton, 13-9, Tuesday.

Talbot was the winning pitcher for the Indians, allowing seven hits. He struck out 20 and walked seven.

Smith (0-4) took the loss for the Bluejays (0-17, 0-11 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two). Smith allowed six hits, struck out 16 and walked four.

Tyler Smith had two hits for Southern. He scored twice and drove in a run. Jeff Karash had two hits and two runs scored.

For the Bluejays, Tom Smith and George Chepke each had two hits.

McDonald 7, Leetonia 0

LEETONIA — Mike Gatta homered and tripled to lead the Blue Devils (13-3, 10-1 ITCL). Gatta had three hits and scored a run.

Anthony Fossaceca had two hits, scored a run and drove in another.

Winning pitcher Anthony Raschilla (5-1) tossed a two-hitter, striking out 13 batters and walking four.

For the Bears (8-5, 6-4), Josh Selway struck out four and walked four. He and Lance Tullis had the hits.

Boardman 10, Perry 1

BOARDMAN — Pat O’Brien (4-2) scattered three hits to pick up the win for the Spartans (13-4, 6-1 Federal League).

Dan Kubala hit a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored twice for Boardman. John Tatarka hit two doubles and drove in three runs. Nick Dinello, Mike Popio, Eric Walters and Evan McCulloh hit two singles apiece.

Salem 12, East 2

SALEM — Starting pitcher Dan Gagnon and reliever Derek Ball combined to pitch a four-hitter for Salem in the five-inning win. Gagnon had four strikeouts.

Shane Kibler had a double, single and two RBIs. Ball and Jim Armeni each had a single and two RBIs to lead Salem’s 10-hit attack.

Ursuline 7, Pymatuning Valley 1

STRUTHERS — Senior Robert Switka (3-0) had 15 strikeouts during a four-hitter.

Senior Nick McCartney had four singles, one RBI and two stolen bases while senior Nick McGahagan had two hits including a double for Ursuline (14-4).

John York had three of Pymatuning Valley’s four hits. The Lakers are 10-7.

Springfield 11, Crestview 1

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Junior Todd Kibby had a three-hitter and 10 strikeouts for Springfield (14-5, 8-1 ITCL1).

Freshman Ronnie Bovo had a double and run-scoring single while sophomore Dylan DeJane had a home run and three RBIs. Junior Frank Sferra had a double, single and two RBIs while freshman Brad Ferraro had two singles and two RBIs.

Josh Orr, Corey Hill and Carter Hill each had a single for Crestview (5-11, 5-6 ).

Columbiana 13, South Range 8

COLUMBIANA — Eric Kissel had two hits while Josh Weikart doubled for the Clippers (9-10, 5-6 ITCL1).

Travis Denmeade drove in three runs while Tyler Denmeade and winning pitcher Josh Saverko drove home two apiece.

For the Raiders, Steve Bensinger’s three hits drove in three runs. Tom Biroschak doubled.

Girard 9, Campbell 5

GIRARD — Chis Weibel had two singles and two RBIs and Aaron Jennings a triple and single to lead Girard (12-8).

Ryan Groh had two singles and three RBIs to pace Campbell. Alex Lopez added a double, single and RBI while Leo Bonilla hit a double and two singles.

Field 4, Southeast 3

RAVENNA — Field won the game in the ninth inning by scoring a run on a wild pitch to snap a 3-3 tie.

Matt Eldreth socked two homers and drove in three runs to pace Field (10-5).

Anthony Cianci had two singles for Southeast (6-10).
