Community center gets $5K grant

YOUNGSTOWN — The United Methodist Community Center, 334 N. Pearl St., has received $5,000 from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

The funding will support the operation of the Family Fitness Program, a program that addresses the growing problems of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes in children, youth and their families.

Through the program, the center offers cardio-mix aerobics, hip-hop aerobics, karate, line dancing, nutrition education, smoking cessation classes and yoga.

The center also has school-based mentoring programs, Building Individual Life Lessons and Getting Ahead in Life, a Family Readiness Center, a Truancy Intervention Program, StopLift, a shoplifting intervention program, and Family Focus, an education, advocacy and food distribution program.

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes that assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The Web site is www.cfmv.org.
