Bedra earns honor
INDIANAPOLIS — YSU senior McKenzie Bedra was named Horizon League softball player of the week.
Bedra led the Penguins to a 3-4 record, posting a .524 batting average with four home runs, a double and 10 RBIs.
Bedra also had a stolen base, her first of the season, and tied the school’s single-season home run record (10).
For the week she had a 1.143 slugging percentage.
Baseball promotions
YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU baseball team will play host to Wright St. in a three-game Horizon League series Friday and Saturday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins will hold a autograph session following Friday night’s contest and on Saturday area baseball team are invited to watch the Penguins take batting practice before their 1 p.m. doubleheader after which they will hold a short clinic for all the youngsters in attendance.
This weekend series is the final regular season league home contest for the Penguins.
They will have one more home game on May 13 against Kent State at 7 p.m.
Penguins in third
LEBANON, Ohio — After two rounds of the Horizon League men’s golf championship, YSU is in third place, just six shots behind first-place Cleveland St. at the Shaker Run Golf Club.
Freshmen Spenser Sulzener and Michael Turner are in the top 10 — Sulzener is seventh after carding a 148 (74-74) and Turner is ninth with 149 (75-74).
Also for YSU, sophomore Tim Morrow is 11th with 150 (75-75), junior Ryan Stocke is 15th with 154 (81-73).
CSU has a team score of 593, followed by Detroit (596) and YSU (599).

AST Tour tickets
CLEVELAND — General admission tickets to the AST Dew Tour Right Guard Open in Cleveland are available.
A limited number of premium-seating tickets are still available.
The Right Guard Open is the second of five events on the 2008 tour and will be held at Cleveland’s North Coast Harbor July 17-20.
Returning for its second year, the event will feature skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross, and is one of two stops to host Open Qualifier competitions.

Eagles recognized
WARREN — Four members of the Warren JFK girls tennis program have been recognized by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association for academics.
Alison Rossi (3.745 grade-point average) and Jenna Alloush (3.426) received Golden Racquet Awards, which are given to seniors who have earned two varsity letters and have maintained a 3.75 GPA for six semesters.
Silver Racquet Awards have been awarded to Marissa Nocera (4.065 ), Gina Fredericka (4.129) and Mia Rubano (3.613).
These awards are given to juniors with two varsity tennis letters and at least a 3.75 GPA for four semesters.
Fleming is speaker
NILES — David Fleming will be the speaker at the Spring dinner for the Niles Historical Society Wednesday at Ciminero’s Banquet Hall.
Dinner is set for 6 p.m. and the program “Celebrating 110 years of football in Niles” will begin at 7 p.m.
Fleming is the senior writer with ESPN Magazine and recently published “Breaker Boys” - Story of the “Pottsville Maroons” team with Niles players Herb and Russ Stein in 1925 . All the Stein relatives from Fl., N.J., Pa, Cleveland will be in attendance.

Late boxing registration set
YOUNGSTOWN — Late registration and weigh-ins for the K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tourney will be held on May 3rd at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Niles from 12 noon until 3 p.m. and at Dick’s in Boardman from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
K.O. Drugs begins May 7th at the I.T.A.M. Banquet Center.
The tournament will run four consecutive Wednesdays with the championships set for May 30th.
The event is open to all high school boys and girls with no prior amateur boxing experience.
