Agency to drivers: Pay heed to motorcyclists

COLUMBUS — With the arrival of nice motorcycle riding weather, the Ohio Department of Public Safety urges automobile drivers to pay special attention to motorcycle riders to reduce motorcycle fatalities.

Because of their smaller size, motorcycles can be hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot, and motorcyclists are more vulnerable in a crash than the driver and passengers in a motor vehicle, ODPS says.

Statistics show that 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in the injury or death of the driver, while only 20 percent of motor vehicle accidents do.

The ODPS offers the following advice for vehicle drivers:

Visually check for motorcyclists, even in blind spots.

Allow three to four seconds following distance for a motorcycle.

For motorcycle riders, the ODPS recommends these things: Ride sober, obtain the proper license, ride alert, use the right gear and get proper motorcycle training.
