YSU’s aim: shoot low, finish high

LEBANON, Ohio — The Youngstown State men’s golf team hopes to improve on its sixth-place finish from last year when they compete in the Horizon League Championships Monday and Tuesday at Shaker Run Golf Club.

Representing the Penguins at the event will be senior Ross Beal, junior Ryan Stocke, sophomore Tim Morrow, freshman Spenser Sulzener, and either senior Ryan McGraw or freshman Michael Turner.

Beal will make his fourth Horizon League championship appearance. In 2007, he placed in 27th with a three-round total of 240; in 2005, he finished in 29th shooting a 238. His personal best finish was in 2004, when he placed 21st with a 234.

Stocke will compete in the championship for the third time. He led the Penguins with an eighth-place finish (228) last year, and was 12th (217) in 2006.

Morrow was 13th last year with a 220.

Sulzener, Turner and McGraw will make their first trip to the championship.

The event will have two 18-hole rounds Monday and one round Tuesday. The champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament.
